Electricity Holds the Future

Electricity Holds the Future

If you are readily asked to mention the industries you think are going to undergo the most change in the next five years, you would readily think of computers - software, information and communication technology - and you might even think of the healthcare sector.

Well, you would be wrong. Massive as the changes in these sectors would be, none would change as remarkably, or as dramatically, as another would. Yes, if you have bee reading about it, you have guessed it right - it is the electric utility industry. Sleepy industry, anyone? Well, that is largely because electric utility had been operated monopoly suppliers. In fact, it is one of the last few existing services in the United States which had enjoyed monopoly regulation services status.

But no more. Over the past two decades, we have seen de-regulation come to the oil and natural gas industries, transport- trucks and airline, banking sectors and cable TV sectors. Next is electricity.

A radical de-regulation is about to hit electricity utility services, which promises to cause massive changes in terms of industry structure, consumer options, and yes, CHEAPER ELECTRICITY. Whatever the changes, and there are going to be quite a few, you would gain. There would be a lesser number of companies, lesser 'vertical integration' and so on.

How? And what are going to be the new changes? Read on to find out..

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have experimented with great success on wireless power transfer procedures. In the near future, that would translate to wireless appliances.

Cleaner sources of Electricity - This stems from two concerns over the use of electricity, and there are efforts to overcome both. One is the effect on the environment - accordingly, cleaner sources of electrical energy are to be used. Secondly, in order to ensure that we don't run out of sources, RENEWABLE sources of energy are to be utilized.

Consumer is the decider - Electricity industry experts that in the new order of things, the consumer is going to wield more power (literally!). In other words, you will get to decide things the way it suits you the best. For instance, you can decide the best way YOU WANT YOUR ELECTRICITY to reach your home, or say, to disrupt connection when you are on a holiday and not at home - that way, you aren't charged for services. TRUTH IS, the experts don't really know when that is going to take place, but they tell us it is going to be sooner rather than later.

More Electrical Gadgets - More and more things might be 'electrified' in the new order of things. Don't get scared, it means that they would run on electricity, and thus become easier and more efficient to handle. For instance, cars or your toothbrush. How would you like it if, say, if your shoes, or pens, became electrical gadgets. Gadget freaks, Exult!

More Reliable Power - With greater control over means of production and greater networks of supply, the power supply would be more regular, AND FAR MORE RELIABLE.
